HON. RONNEL CHUA RIVERA
Ronnel Chua Rivera– “Nel” as fondly called by his friends, was born on September 1, 1971 to Rodrigo E. Rivera, Sr. and Dolores Chua-Rivera. He is married to Jane Gollon-Rivera and their marriage is blessed with four children.
Among the brood, he has been reckoned as the Rivera who walks among the common man. A handshake, a tap on the shoulder, an assuring smile exhibit his attitude of being a friend to everyone. He makes no judgment of anyone’s character and patiently listens to endless tales. His lifestyle and disposition reflect his humble demeanor, and he gains respect not out of his social stature but out of his unique personality that transcends beyond being a leader.
Before he became a public official, he was deeply engaged in the management of the family business and has contributed great impact and improvement in enterprise development. Nevertheless, community development and interventions are not new to him as he was a member of the Board of Trustees of RD Foundation, Inc. and an active member of the Rotary Club of Metro Dadiangas.
To date, he is on his second term as the Local Chief Executive (LCE) of General Santos City, and his flagship program C.L.E.A.N Gensan (Creating a Livable Environment for All Generals Towards Nation Building) has been taking its flight. Further, he significantly contributed to the growth and development of Gensan through his flagship programs and projects AKLAT and AMPING which make Gensan livable city for all Generals towards nation building.
These programs have already brought numerous feats to the city including the 2017 Galing Pook Award for his brainchild program “Likay Droga”. Aside from that, the City was conferred and cited with various awards and distinctions like Seal of Child -Friendly Local Governance in 2017, Exemplary performance as fully functional Local Social Welfare and Development Office, first to utilize the Family Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Information System, and the Jesse Robredo Seal of Good Education Governance because of the many innovations and initiatives that he undertook in the city.
The mission to pursue a stable local economy supportive of development and growth has gained wide support from various government and non-government agencies and partners. While ensuring that his responsibilities as LCE are in place and well-managed, Mayor Rivera is also the current Chairman of the Regional Development Council of Region 12 and the Vice Chairman of the League of Cities in the Philippines.
Mayor Rivera is widely involved in the economic growth and development not only in General Santos City but throughout the region. Recently, the National Competitiveness Council Philippines identified the LGU Gensan as Top 14 Highly Urbanized City and No. 9 as the Most Improved LGU among HUCs. This conferment was done during the 6th Regional Competitiveness Summit 2018 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index Awards.
Aside from his sterling performance in governance, he is noted for not receiving his salary from day one as a city councilor up to the present as city mayor. He is allocating his salary to the PTCA of all public schools in the city.
That is why recently, he was awarded as one of the Outstanding City Mayors of the Philippines for Highly Urbanized City during the Gawad Parangal 2019 conferred by the Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines, and he was also recognized along with Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte, Cagayan De Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno and Iligan City Mayor Celso S. Regencia as Outstanding Mindanaonon in Governance and Leadership Excellence by the Mindanao Daily and Veterans Bank. Rivera is honored for his commendable public service, effective leadership and consistency in governance as city mayor and as paragon of political will in action.
